Lady Kendra’s Hats

I have just discovered that my latest heroine, Lady Kendra Townsend, loves hats! It’s funny (and so much fun!) how a character continues to develop even during the editing process. When she first meets Captain Colburn (the hero) she is wearing a monsterous purple number with lots of feathers that droop into her eyes. Here are some photos I found of some fabulous hats!

I picture Kendra wearing something like this when she meets Dorian for the first time.

I would love to wear this one, wouldn’t you?

So Sweet!

Love this dress too!

Straw hats were all the rage in late 1700′s – early 1800′s

The “Picture Hat” made famous by Georgiana, the Duchess of Devonshire.

I think this is my favorite!

Okay, what about you? Do you like hats? Do you wear them? Do you wish we still wore hats like this?

Big Fish!

We went out to my mom and dad’s house Sunday to celebrate my sister’s birthday and my DH, Tony, caught a huge fish – guessing around 40 pounds! His fishing line was only good for 8 pounds so there was quite a bit of skill involved (the fish broke through a neighbor kid’s net!). I was laughing when they finally caught it and said to my sister, “Now he’s got another story to tell over and over again!” LOL! Congrats, honey!

P.S. He let the fish go after the photos were taken and it swam away to be caught again another day!

Beautiful Possible Settings

Wow! God has made some beautiful places on the earth, hasn’t He?

One of my future books is set in one of these locations. Can you guess which one?

Another Dorian Wanna Be!

Okay, Marie commented on the post below with the suggestion to add Oded Fehr to the list of possible Dorians. After looking him up, I gotta say she has the right idea! He’s definitely a contender!!

What do you think?

Which Dorian do You Like Best?

I am busy today filling out my Marketing Information Form for my publisher. One of the questions asks for a physical description of my characters. I’ve been looking for photos to represent what I picture them to look like. My hero, Dorian Colburn, is a rugged American sea captain who fights pirates upon occasion. Which photo do you like best for him?

This is pretty perfect but Dorian has blue eyes.

Remember the story Dorian Gray? Creepy!
But this guy looks a lot like my mental image.

What a cute couple! Julianne Hough is a perfect look for Kendra (more on her below) and her then beau, country singer Chuck Wicks, is a good candidate for Dorian. Hey . . . Chuck probably lives in Nashville! I wonder if we could get him to model for the cover!?! LOL! And would he be willing to wear some hair extensions?

Here’s what Kendra (my heroine) thinks of Dorian the first time she sees him:

“Kendra’s glimpse of the man had only lasted a few seconds but his image burned in her mind. She’d never met an American before and he looked as wild as she’d heard them to be, handsome in a rugged way that she was unaccustomed to. His face was tan, so different from the milky white complexions she was used to seeing. He had rather long, dark curling hair that had been brushed back from chiseled features and waved in the breeze. His eyes were a cerulean blue with silver flicks in them and filled with piercing intensity and . . . disdain. Thick black brows arched almost wickedly over his eyes. His chin was square with a small cleft and she sensed he may have a dimple in his left check when he smiled. Small lines stood on either side of his well-molded mouth. His lips were slightly wide with even white teeth peering behind them. Kendra peeked up through her lashes and saw broad shoulders and a wide chest. He looked like a pirate she’d once read about. Goodness Lord, I didn’t know you made such men for real!”

Okay, here are some photos of what I picture the lovely Lady Kendra Townsend to look like: (Her most distinctive feature is bluish-violet eyes) Dorian takes one look at her and thinks, “She is going to be a whole new kind of trouble. He looks down at her, peering from beneath a monsterous purple hat the color of her eyes, and scowls.”

Jaime King has gorgeous eyes!

Julianne Hough is soooo pretty!

Well, back to work. This is so much fun!!!!

Best Seller List

Here is a great post on making it to the best seller lists. Check it out here http://www.jungleredwriters.com/2010/05/kvetching-about-bestseller-list.html

Are You Afraid of Failure?

Check out my writing buddy’s new book about failure! Failure: The Secret of Success by Robby Slaughter http://www.failurethebook.com/book/ I had plenty of failures before breaking in to publishing, failures as a mom and wife and friend so I can’t wait to read this book and be encouraged. I’ve ordered my copy!

Failure: The Secret to Success is a book about something everybody knows but not many people like to talk about. We’ve all met that guy at a party who goes on and on about life as if it was a country song. However, our desire to keep our failures under wraps is in itself a huge mistake. Everybody who achieves unbelievable victories also knows saddening defeats.

“The only real mistake is the one from which we learn nothing” - John Powell

Endorsements

As authors we are sometimes asked to endorse books and/or seek endorsements from others. I have a question for you today. How important are endorsements on books? If you see a recommendation on the cover by another author that you’ve heard of or read does that impact your decision to buy the book? What if the endorsement is from a reviewer? An expert in the field that is the topic of the book?

If you have a moment to comment I would love to hear your thoughts!
